In the 1950s, the American government initiated the construction of a network of interstates to keep up with the rapidly increasing number of automobiles. Thanks in part to the input of Governor Clement, Interstate 40 was built through the southern region of Dickson County, passing just four miles south of Dickson, turning Highway 46 into a new main road. By the 1970s, commercial expansion was creeping towards the interstate, introducing the city of Dickson to a fresh wave of visitors. Dining establishments and accommodations began to appear, and by the 1990s, the city limits of Dickson had expanded beyond I-40.
The population of Dickson surged from 5,028 in 1960 to 14,538 in 2010, marking a 189% growth in 50 years. The 2020 Census put the city's population at 16,058, representing a 10.45% rise over a decade and a 219% increase over six decades. Presently, out of the 468 cities and towns in Tennessee, Dickson ranks as the 36th largest.
